5 games to get your body moving while stuck at home

Get up from your couch or gaming chair and move your body!

Being a gamer doesn’t have to mean being a couch potato, and following quarantine doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. So here are 5 games to get your body moving!

Dance Dance Revolution

Console: Arcade, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and older consoles
Public: Everyone can learn this game, but harder levels are for experts
Sweat meter: Prepare a bucket

If you like moving your feet at supersonic speed to fast-paced music, Dance Dance Revolution is the perfect game for you. Ever since the first opus of the saga released in 1998 by Konami, Dance Dance Revolution has been considered a staple for games that get you moving.

The gameplay is quite easy to understand, but hard to master. The player stands in the middle of a dance pad, with arrows forming a cross around them. As the game begins, the player must step their feet to correspond with the arrows that appear on the screen and matching the music beat.

Initially released as an arcade game for two players, Dance Dance Revolution evolved to adapt to the changes of the gaming industry. From its original dual arcade cabinet to a soft dance pad for its PlayStation version, Dance Dance Revolution is available anywhere to play anywhere you want to take it.

ring fit adventure

Ring Fit Adventure

Console: Nintendo Switch
Public: Everyone
Sweat meter: Bring deodorant

Ring Fit Adventure is an RPG adventure game in which players fight monsters by doing physical exercise. At the beginning of the game, you meet a living ring who becomes your ally to defeat an evil bodybuilder dragon. Sweating to beat an evil bodybuilder dragon is kind of the golden standard when looking for games that get you moving, am I right?

Ring Fit Adventure comes with two accessories: the Ring-Con, which is a rigid plastic ring, and the Leg Strap – a band that hangs around the leg. They both include a slot to place the Switch’s Joy-Cons.

In addition to the adventure mode, the game includes an overall fitness routine that allows you to exercise without the RPG elements. Ring Fit Adventure also has different mini-games linked to certain exercises, which can be played solo or against others.

Finally, if you live in a flat and don’t want to bother your neighbors by jumping around, Ring Fit Adventure has you covered. The game includes a silent mode, which replaces all impact exercises with more quiet ones.

just dance

Just Dance

Console: Wii, Wii U, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
Public: Everyone
Sweat meter: Bring deodorant

Just Dance is probably the most popular dancing game – and, of course, a must-have in our list of games that get you moving! The first opus of Ubisoft’s saga was released on Wii in 2009. Over a decade later, the game is still among the top sales of sports games. The gameplay is easy and does not require any gaming experience. The goal of Just Dance is to just dance, following the movements of the dancers on-screen.

The game not only includes the latest pop music to get you moving, but also a large variety of modes to keep you entertained. You can dance with people all around the world, get sweaty with a special Just Sweat mode, and even get the kids to move with Just Dance Kids.

Superhot VR

Console: PlayStation 4, Windows
Public: Teenagers and adults – includes violence
Sweat meter: Prepare a bucket

Superhot VR is a unique kind of shooter playable with a virtual reality headset. In this game, you can control time with your movements. If you don’t move, your enemies won’t move. But as soon as you do, everything goes to mayhem.

It may seem easy on paper, but Superhot VR combines physical exercise with brainstorming. You are outnumbered, outgunned, and you won’t get any health pack or ammo magically appearing as you progress. Enemies and bullets come at you from all sides. You have to dodge attacks by physically moving, while being aware of your time-bending ability.

beat saber

Beat Saber

Console: PlayStation 4, Windows
Public: Anyone who can wear a VR headset
Sweat meter: Bring deodorant

Beat Saber is a rhythm game in VR. Your goal is to follow the beat of the music by destroying cubes. The game indicates which hand to use and in which direction you should hit the cubes. As the levels get harder, the rhythm gets faster and the cubes float everywhere at supersonic speed. Picture a game which rides the line between Just Dance and Guitar Hero, but in which you use a lightsaber to rhythmically destroy cubes: welcome to Beat Saber.

In Beat Saber, you will have to bend to one side and the other, duck, move your arms like crazy and pay extra attention to stay up with the rhythm. This game will get you moving, and you won’t even notice. And if you don’t want to sweat alone, you can play with a friend in Party Mode.
