I spend a lot of time in Destiny 2 PvP. I am not there because I dislike the rest of the game, I just love testing my skill against other people, and getting better. But having fun and wrecking people consistently in the Crucible doesn’t just come down to skill. In fact, winning is more about finding out where you fit in the grand scheme of Destiny 2 PvP.
I believe there are three roles in the Crucible that almost all players fit into. If you find that you are doing poorly even after a lot of practice, you might have fallen into the wrong role. Sometimes you could be doing well and still not enjoying yourself – it is worth looking into what you could try to do differently.
Your role in the Crucible
The first archetype that people run into in Destiny 2 PvP is what I like to call the Pusher. They just want to make you stress and be in your face the entire time. You are forced to make decisions, and they aren’t always the right one. So how do you know this role is for you? Well, it is simple: how fast do you want to go in the Crucible? If you want to fly around then you should adopt this role.
Then we have the Flex, and in my opinion this is the most important role in the crucible. The Flex is good at adapting to the playstyles of the other team. They have a lot of long-range players but can’t handle being pushed? The Flex starts pushing. There is an easy way to tell if you belong here: when playing PvP, do you love to switch stuff up constantly? Do you see the Crucible as chess, not checkers? Then you are in fact a Flex. Not everyone can be a Flex.
The third main role in Destiny 2 PvP is the Support. You are there to help the other two roles in whatever they are doing. Most of the time this is a long-range position. You are behind the team, helping out and providing cover fire. If you don’t like to push the pace, and you want your shots to have more purpose, then you are a Support.
At this point I know what you are thinking. This isn’t enough info for me to adopt these roles. What about strategy and weapon choices? Well, I will be releasing a guide to each role detailing all of that for you Guardians. For now, just go into the Crucible and feel out where you fit. Try each role out and decide what is for you. There will be frustrations and good times, but through it all remember – eyes up, Guardian.
