Ellie’s guitar in The Last of Us 2 is catching celebrity attention

What’s my lyrics again?

The Last of Us 2 was one of 2020’s most anticipated releases, bringing tension and despair to every playthrough. But it’s not all doom and gloom; Naughty Dog found a way to cut the tension by gifting Ellie the talent of music. Ellie’s guitar playing has already covered the likes of a-ha, Pearl Jam, and Shawn James.

[ Spoiler warning, don’t click the next hyperlink if you haven’t finished the game yet: By the end of the game, we know she won’t be the second coming of *insert great guitar player* of her post-apocalyptic generation. ]

The Last of Us 2 has been out for almost a month and players are mastering the musical game mechanics, learning how to get Ellie’s guitar precisely striking digital strings on a PlayStation controller’s track pad. Sure, it’s easier to learn guitar, but who in this virus-infested world (IRL, not the world in The Last of Us 2) would learn the guitar properly?

It’s gotten to the point where people are performing covers and uploading them to YouTube. While the game’s official catalog of covers only spans three songs, Ellie’s guitar playing has now expanded to: Metallica, Johnny Cash, Linkin Park, Elvis Presley, Green Day, The Beatles, and on and on and on and on.

Recently, Mark Hoppus of Blink-182 took to his Twitch stream to hop on this trend. He managed to map out the chords roughly, so that’s a plus, but wouldn’t sing in key. Hoppus attempted to mimic a southern voice to emulate a cross between Elvis, Joel, and your drunken uncle around a campfire. Dude, you’re literally the lead singer to one of the most successful pop-punk bands of all-time and you can’t sing in key? He even forgot the lyrics to Dammit, arguably their most iconic song! Lets nip this digression in the bud before this article derails from Ellie’s guitar playing to an angsty hate piece aiming frustration from Tom DeLonge’s departure from Blink-182. Oh wait, too late.

Anyway. Director Neil Druckmann stated that there aren’t any plans for DLC, musical or otherwise, but it would be neat to see Ashley Johnson (the voice actress for Ellie) covering songs with Ellie’s guitar playing scenes. These scenes are so iconic that replica guitars are being sold for $2,299.

While Johnson has done more than enough by lending her talents to one of the greatest IPs of all time, it would be amazing to see her upstage Blink-182 at their own song without forgetting the lyrics. Seriously though, Mark, it’s your literal job to remember the lyrics to your band’s songs. #IMissYouTom
