6 exploration and adventure games like Biomutant

2021 brought us Biomutant, a beautiful action RPG with unique combat and customization mechanics, and a story taking place in a vast open world. Biomutant was met with mixed reviews, with many players finding various faults with the gameplay, though the game’s world was universally praised for its beauty and originality. If you are reading this, then you already know all of that, and are looking for other games like Biomutant, so let’s go!

The Ratchet & Clank series

According to Experiment 101’s studio head, Stefan Ljungqvist, Biomutant took inspiration from many games, and the Ratchet & Clank series is definitely a part of that list. You can tell where that inspiration went, from the design of the characters which definitely resembles that of Ratchet & Clank, to the game’s world which is inhabited by a mix of adorable animals with robotic features.

Biomutant’s story is a bit more mature, and its aesthetic a bit darker and less cartoony. The Rather & Clank games are more about pure fun and adventure, so they are a great alternative if you want to unplug from Biomutant‘s morality system and repetitive crafting and combat loop.

Ghost of a Tale

Ghost of a Tale is a great game set in a medieval world inhabited by all sorts of intelligent animals, such as frogs, mice, crabs, and spiders.

The story revolves around a brave mouse called Tilo, who goes on a special mission to save the world from an event that killed many creatures and brought them back as a zombie army.

The game might seem a bit childish because of the art style and characters, but don’t be fooled, Ghost of a Tale has a mature story, and the gameplay is very engaging. The mysteries and puzzles the game throws at you are pretty serious too, so prepare to flex your brainpower.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Another game that heavily influenced Biomutant is obviously The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. To be fair, Breath of the Wild influenced almost every open world game to come after it, including some of the games on this list.

Much like in Biomutant, Breath of the Wild has a vast open-world, that players can explore freely, whilst collecting items, doing side quests, and solving puzzles and riddles. That’s not the similarities end, either. If you still haven’t played this masterpiece of a game, we serious suggest you grab Breath of the Wild ASAP.

Immortals Fenyx Rising

This one is one of my favorite games on this list. Immortals Fenyx Rising is similar to Biomutant in a couple of ways.

First, the player gets a lot of freedom to customize their own character. Second, the player gets to explore a huge open world consisting of seven regions. And third, much like in Biomutant, the player’s character in Immortals Fenix Rising also gets a companion, except that instead of a grasshopper, the player gets a bird named Phosphor.

Immortals Fenyx Rising makes Greek mythology its setting. The action takes place at a time in history when Typhon, a monstrous serpentine giant, escapes the mountain where Zeus imprisoned him, and decides to enact his vengeance by stealing the other Gods’ powers. The story proceeds and Fenyx is tasked with defeating Typhon in order to restore balance to the world.

Pine is an adventure game in which a young man searches around the world for a new land where his tribe can settle and thrive. There are countless challenges and obstacles to overcome along the way, and the player needs to find ways to deal with them in order to get their tribe to their new home.

The game has very casual and relaxing graphics and can be played by basically anyone, regardless of whether they prefer casual games or more hardcore experiences.

That said, Pine  does require some tactical thinking, so it’s definitely not to be taken too lightly. You will be playing in a world full of intelligent creatures and animals, which poses a lot of interactive choice. If you are feeling adventurous, Pine is definitely a game you should try.

The Devil May Cry series

The developers of Biomutant mentioned that they also took some inspiration from Devil May Cry. At first, this claim seems rather impossible, as the stories are very different, and the graphics and art style of the two games are complete opposites. However, there is one thing that is found in both games: a fast-paced melee and projectile-based combat system.

The story of Devil May Cry follows a demon hunter called Dante, who essentially has to singlehandedly thwart non-stop demon invasions on Earth. The combat is highly involved, featuring different attack types and combos. If combat is the main thing you enjoyed in Biomutant, you should give the Devil May Cry games a shot, though they offer a very different experience overall.

I hope you enjoyed this list of games like Biomutant. Stay tuned to SQUAD for more  gaming content and lists!
