Halloween is closing in and in the spirit of the season, we are going to go over some of the best short horror games you can play on Halloween. These are some of the better horror titles to come out in recent years in their own right, but they have the added benefit of being reasonably short – so you can finish them and be in bed right on time to have your full eight hours of nightmares.
The Medium (8 hours)
The Medium is a third-person psychological horror game that came out in January 2021. In this game, the player takes on the role of Marianne, a woman who has a very strong connection to the spirit realm and can travel in and out of it at any time.
Playing as Marianna, you will be traveling to an abandoned resort where a bunch of people were massacred and it’s your mission to find a man named Thomas, who is aware of your psychic abilities and has offered to explain the origin of her powers. You will have to solve a lot of puzzles and riddles, run from hostile forces trying to bring you down, and solve Thomas’ mystery at the same time.
As the longest game on this list, The Medium game takes eight hours to complete. You likely won’t even notice the time go by, as the game is as entertaining as it is scary.
Little Nightmares 2 (5 hours)
Little Nightmares 2 is a bit of an underrated game that came out in early 2021. The game isn’t just about well-placed jump spaces, but instead is revolves around placing the player in uncomfortable scenarios. Between the creepy environments and terrifying villains, Little Nightmares 2 is a proper bone-chilling experience.
At 5 hours in run time, Little Nightmares 2 is just perfect for a (relatively) cozy evening at home on Halloween. Be advised, that you should play the first Little Nightmares first.
Erie (1 hour)
Erie has got to be one of the shortest horror games I’ve ever played, but don’t let the one-hour game length fool you into thinking the story isn’t deep or well crafted.
Erie opens in a very memorable way. Imagine waking up in a research facility with blood splattered all over and, for some weird unknown reason, lots of dead cats. The research facility is almost like a maze and your only way to keep track of where you’ve been is the paint can, which allows you to mark paths traversed in the past. Eventually, while trying to find your way out, a monster will be set loose on your trail.
Took me well over an hour to finish the game, but some players have actually managed to finish it in under 30 minutes.
Blair Witch (6 hours)
If you like stories about witches and scary woods – or are just nostalgic for the early 2000s found footage horror craze – this is the game for you. In Blair Witch, you are a former police officer who joins a police search party looking for a nine-year-old missing child named Peter.
You will have to search the mysterious woods with nothing but a video camera, cell phone, flashlight, and your dog, Bullet. There is a lot of stealth and survival involved in the game and you will have to pay attention to every creepy detail in the game in order to solve the game’s puzzles. Six hours of pure fun.
The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes (5 hours)
Anyone who knows me knows that I love the Dark Pictures Anthology game series, so naturally it deserves a place on this list.
In The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes, five people are trapped inside an underground Mesopotamian temple during the 2003 Iraq war; naturally, they are stalked and hunted by mysterious creatures there. The five-hour-long game will have you play as all five of the characters and it is your job to make sure at least some of them survive.
Each choice you make will change the characters’ fate, so don’t make any hasty decisions. House of Ashes is set to release on Oct. 22, but if you want, you can play the other games in the series, as all have similar lengths and gameplay.
Mundaun (7 hours)
Mundaun is a 2021 horror video game in which the player controls Curdin, an individual who returns to his hometown for a funeral. The circumstances around the death don’t sit well with Curdin, so he decides to check out his grandfather’s grave, only to make a shocking discovery.
In order to find the truth about what happened, Curdin decides to go up to the top of the mountain, but before reaching it, he has to solve a bunch of puzzles and deal with unforeseen opponents.
Alright, I know Phasmophobia is not a short horror game, but if you have the time, don’t miss out on this awesome experience.
In Phasmophobia, you get to control a team of ghost hunters, going around with no discernible sense of self-preservation and identifying spooky ghost haunts. None of the ghosts are friendly. Phasmophobia is especially fun with friends.
And there you have it, my top list of short horror games you can play on Halloween. Feel free to tell me which ones you like best and if you’d add any other game to the list.
