Every year welcomes a fresh batch of new FPS and third-person action games, as these tend to be the most immersive gaming experiences available. There is a lot to choose from, Below is my personal list of new can’t-miss FPS and third-person games coming out in 2022 on PC.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl
S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2: Heart of Chernobyl is an upcoming first-person shooter game set to be released in April 2022. If you are unfamiliar with the series, here’s a rough overview: in this single-player game, you take control of a sole “stalker” – a looter exploring the radioactive wasteland of Chernobyl after the meltdown. As you travel across this cursed landscape, you must overcome obstacles such as violent mutants or other factions.
Players will be able to choose from 30 different weapons with several modifications that allow you to create a variety of combinations. There are valuable artifacts hidden in the most dangerous areas around the game’s world. Players will get to experience immersive survival mechanics – such as hunger, thirst, bleeding, and the need to sleep – which should enrich the gameplay and make it more realistic.
Cultic is an old-school FPS in which you fight against a mysterious and dangerous sect of cultists. The game is set in a fictional 20th century and seems to draw inspiration from classics like Blood and Doom.
Cultic includes a dynamic combat system that alternates between fast-paced gunfights and sequences of sneaking around and setting up traps and ambushes. Players will be able to use different approaches depending on the situation.
The graphics and sound are kept in line with the retro style boomer-shooter fans should be familiar with from recent hits like Dusk. It’s pure nostalgia-bait, and it’s great. However, the game has realistic physics and lighting and features modern mechanics that seem to blend well with the retro gameplay.
Graven is an upcoming dark fantasy first-person shooter expected to come out sometime in 2022. In Graven, you will take on the role of a priest on a journey to rid the land from an evil presence. You can expect all the good stuff you normally get from retro-inspired FPS games: fighting horrific enemies, interacting with the occasional NPC, and using outlandish weaponry.
Besides the main story, there are a lot of side quests and upgrades to be obtained from NPCs, and players will be able to find a wide variety of weapons and spells. Graven can be played single-player, in split-screen co-op, and even in multiplayer mode with up to four players.
Splatoon 3’s main game mode is 4v4 arena battle. Players can switch forms: in Humanoid form they can use weapons to spread ink and splat opponents, and in Octopus form they can enter ink pools, which allows them to swim around the arena at a great speed.
Returning Splatoon players will have access to new movement techniques, and will get to choose from a variety of characters and customize them.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder´s Revenge is a side-scrolling brawler game set to be released in 2022 for PC and Nintendo Switch. The game is loosely based on the 1987 animated series and the previous video games built around the series, so it is an old-school game aimed at nostalgic players. Each Ninja Turtle has their own attacks and abilities. Notably, TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge can be played by up to four players in co-op.
Anyone who knows me, knows I am a sucker for Bethesda Softworks, so I just had to include Redfall on this list. Redfall is a co-op FPS about the struggle to fight back a vampire infestation in the fictional town of Redfall, Massachusetts. The town is under siege by the undead and their cultist followers, and it is your job, alongside other survivors, to defeat the vampires and free the town.
Redfall will be available on Xbox and PC and it is set to be released sometime in mid-2022.
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
Borderland fans, good news for you: Gearbox Software is expanding the franchise with Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. This game acts as a spin-off to Borderlands and as a sequel to Borderlands 2: Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep.
Much like the previous games, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is an FPS with some RPG highlights. It can either be played solo, online, or in local split-screen co-op. There are six character classes, and for the first time in the whole series players will be able to mix skills from different classes.
The story of Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands begins right after the ending of Borderlands 2, so I am very excited about this one.
I hope this quick list of new FPS and third-person games coming out in 2022 has given you things to look forward to!
