7 scary games to play with kids on Halloween

Halloween is right around the corner, so it is time to settle down with some scary games. Since not everyone’s entire family may be ready for Dead by Daylight, here is a selection of 7 scary games you can play with kids on Halloween.

Luigi’s Mansion 3

Platform: Nintendo Switch
Recommended age: 7+

In this franchise, Luigi is finally taking the lead role over his brother. Unfortunately for our green hero, it is in a haunted hotel filled with evil ghosts. In Luigi’s Mansion 3, Mario and his friends go missing and it is up to Luigi to find out what happened.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 is a spooky game in which you have to hunt ghosts and vacuum them with a Ghostbuster-like weapon. While the atmosphere may be scary for children, there is no violence or any disturbing imagery that could haunt their dreams.

Spooky Chase

Platform: PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One
Recommended age: 3+

Spooky Chase is a platformer filled with scary monsters like witches, skeletons, and zombies. The enemies replicate every step you take, so you have to be careful about your every move. Your goal is to capture the flag of each level, without dying to monsters taking the exact same path you just walked.

Spooky Chase is a Halloween game for the entire family, with plenty of cute monsters and a spooky atmosphere. It also features 4-player local multiplayer, so everyone can run away from their past selves.

Hello Neighbor

Platform: Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, iOS, Android
Recommended age: 7+

Hello Neighbor is a stealth horror game about sneaking into your creepy neighbor’s house. Who knows what kind of mysteries you could find in there? Nothing too disturbing, of course, as this game is for children 7 and up.

The main thrill of Hello Neighbor is managing the risk of getting busted by the neighbor. You will have to lure him away from you, all while searching his house and solving puzzles. Hello Neighbor is a family-friendly horror game that is not too scary for younger players.

Hollow Knight

Platform: Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
Recommended age: 7+

Hollow Knight is a 2D action-adventure game in which a ghost-looking hero has to uncover the mysteries of Hallownest. This abandoned kingdom is filled with caverns housing giant bugs, vampires, and other cute-yet-dangerous enemies.

Hollow Knight won’t give anyone nightmares but still carries that spooky Halloween vibe. The biggest challenge in the game is not to die, which is not as easy as it seems. Besides its Castlevania-like gameplay, Hollow Knight deserves a mention for its story and unique graphics.

Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes

Platform: Android, Microsoft Windows, OS X, PlayStation 4, Linux, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One
Recommended age: 3+

In Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, a player is stuck with a bomb and needs the help of other players to find out how to defuse it. The tricky part is that the other players don’t see the bomb, but they are the only ones with the manual containing instructions to defuse the bomb.

While this game is rated PEGI 3+, that may still be a bit young to play Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes. This game is all about communication and team play, all while in a stressful environment. However, as there is no violence, it is safe for the younger players to stay near others who try to defuse the bomb.

Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville

Platform: Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch
Recommended age: 7+

Plants vs. Zombies is a series of tower defense games featuring, you guessed it, plants and zombies. The goal is to set up a defense with various types of flowers to protect your farm against waves of zombies.

Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville is the latest installment of the series. Plants vs. Zombies is not really scary but still features zombies, making it a great pick for our selection of scary games for kids this Halloween.

Subnautica

Platform: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows, macOS
Recommended age: 7+

Subnautica is a nightmare for everyone who is afraid of the monsters lying deep under the sea. This open-world survival action-adventure game takes place in the depths of an alien ocean, filled with creatures ranging from cute little fish to deadly predators.

The main goal of Subnautica is to survive. You get to explore the alien ocean and gather at its marvels, but you also need to check your oxygen level, gather resources, and avoid becoming a snack to an underwater alien lifeform. Subnautica is rated PEGI 7+ but its expansion, Subnautica: Below Zero, is for kids above 12.

Halloween is the perfect time to get a little scared, even for the younger players. Which of these scary games for kids will you play on Halloween? If you are looking for scarier games for adults, there’s Bárbara’s selection of 6 short horror games to play (and finish) on Halloween.
