Everything we know about Immortals: Fenyx Rising

Ubisoft’s September Forward event shed light on the upcoming game Immortals: Fenyx Rising. The open-world IP was unveiled under the name Gods & Monsters at E3 2019 as an action-adventure RPG with hints of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. This article will cover in detail everything that was shown at the September Ubisoft Forward and everything we know so far.

Odyssey meets Breath of the Wild

According to first impressions, Immortals is a mix of a number of games, starting with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Breath of the Wild. The game follows the journey of Fenyx, a protagonist who can be customized to the players’ liking. The story opens with a looming threat, Typhon the Titan threatening to destroy the world and all the gods with it. The story is narrated by Zeus and Prometheus as they watch Fenyx from the heavens.

True to Greek myth, Immortals is a hero’s journey through and through. The game inhabits a fictional island that is dripping in mythological character, from the Pantheon of the gods to Hephaestus’ forge. Fenyx is tasked to summon gods, defeat monsters, and solve puzzles to uncover secret powers.

All of this leads up to the final fight with Typhon who threatens to destroy the world. Players will get a taste of his power during Typhon’s Rage, in-game events during which the titan will send down monsters to stop Fenyx. Fenyx will summon more gods along their journey, each with a unique story and section of the island. The art style, elements of the UI, and general game mechanics are heavily influenced by Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Gear fit for a god

At the beginning of Immortals: Fenyx Rising, Fenyx can be customized to the players liking, and are given a choice of a male or female model. Going forward, Fenyx must defeat mythological monsters, solve puzzles in ancient vaults, and commune with the gods to receive otherwordly gear and abilities. No specific details were given on weapons and armor, but we did get a glimpse at a few of the godly powers that Fenyx can harness.

Ubisoft emphasized the versatility of Fenyx’s abilities inside and outside of battle. The Wings of Daedalus allow Fenyx to take flight, a faster way to traverse the island. Athena’s dash pushes Fenyx in a single direction and is used to dodge incoming attacks. Heracles’ bracers can halt thrown objects mid-air and lob them back at the opposition, and Aries’ wrath will limit the damage that Fenyx takes, and increase their own. Some of the powers have a utility that will help Fenyx clear ancient vaults that hold Zeus’ lightning bolts.

The Pantheon of the Gods is the home base for Fenyx, and this is where they will upgrade armor, weapons, and abilities. So far Ubisoft has announced that Coins of Charon and Zeus’ lightning bolts will be used as upgrade materials. Additionally, players will collect numerous plants and craftables that can be used to make potions and boosters.

Immortals: Fenyx Rising will release on Dec. 3, and Google Stadia players will get the chance to try out the demo before the full game releases. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will be arriving a month before Immortals, offering a gritty and visceral Vikings experience.

A long step away from the educational modes of Assassin’s Creed Origins and Odyssey, Immortals: Fenyx Rising aims to cater to a separate audience, one that loves exploration and diving into the rich world of mythology without the excessive violence and realistic game style.

As more information is released in the months leading up to its release, make sure to check back in for the latest details.
