6 great rat-themed games to play in The Year of the Rat

2020 is the Year of the Rat according to the Chinese Zodiac, and I personally can’t help to be excited about it. This is predicted to be a lucky year, after all, but that’s not why you are here. You are here because you want to see some cool rat-themed video games, and I got you covered. Here are my Top 3 personal favorite rat-themed games of 2020!

A Plague Tale: Innocence

To start off this last, we have A Plague Tale: Innocence! This is an epic adventure horror game set in Aquitaine, in the year of 1348, which obviously is the Year of the Rat. The game is all about surviving in a world infested by rats. And I don’t mean a few rats here and there. In A Plague Tale, you face thousands of them!

The player takes control of Amicia de Rune, and has to learn how to beat the game’s survival puzzles, in order to scare away or distract the hordes of hungry rats. But rats aren’t the only enemy, as there are many unpleasant humans who will also try to get the player killed.

Warhammer: Vermintide 2

Warhammer: Vermintide 2 is number 2 on the list and it’s an absolute must for this Year of the Rat list. This awesome game is a sequel to Warhammer: End Times and is all about players cooperating and bashing their way through hordes of Chaos Warriors and a weird race of rat-men known as the Skaven.

The game features 5 different characters to play as and each character can have different careers, skills and abilities. And the best part? With the Year of the Rat upon us, Vermintide 2 is updating the game with lots of cool new content. I mean new maps, campaigns, weapons and best of all… the new PvP mode, Versus.

Our next title is slightly more casual, but at the same time very unique: Ratropolis. This game was released in November 2019, and it’s all about defending a rat nation from its very malevolent enemies. The game is based around defending your city with quick judgement and the use of a deckbuilding order system. Ratropolis offers a lot of fun for strategically minded players, and its small world is cute and dark in equal measure.

Those are the most recent rat-themed games on my radar. They’re fun, engaging and give you quite a good feel of what a rat-invaded world would look like. Then again, I can’t help but to share with you some of the old classics that still rock!

Ghost of a Tale

Ghost of a Tale is one of the most badass rat-themed games I’ve ever played. This game takes place in a medieval world that happens to be inhabited by all sorts of intelligent animals. That means mice, rats, frogs, crabs, spiders, leeches and so many more.

The game is set years after the War of the Green Flame, an event that killed many creatures and resurrected their bodies into an ever-growing undead army. When the situation gets out of control, the mouse kingdom decides to send an envoy to the Green Flame, in hopes of saving their kin. And so the mighty mouse Tilo goes on a special mission to save the world!

Kings Under The Hill

Kings Under The Hill is a small and extremely unique game about growing a rat empire and waging warfare in underground tunnels. You build your underground kingdom’s economy, improve your soldiers and fight off enemies.

Besides its minimalistic and somber aesthetic, Kings Under The Hill is a rare example of an isometric real-time strategy game.

This final game on my list is not exactly rat-focused, but I am the number one fan of Bethesda Softworks, and so naturally, I felt like Dishonored deserved some more attention. It came out in 2012 and I completely obsessed over it right from the start. Heck, I still play it every couple of years.

Dishonored is set in the dystopian city of Dunwall, which is infested with plague-carrying rats. You’ll find dead bodies and rat swarms wherever you go. You play as Corvo Attano, bodyguard to the Empress, who is framed for her murder.

Dishonored - Cinematic Trailer

Granted, Dishnored is not a rat-themed game, but there are huge swarms of rats running throughout the entire city, feasting on the dead – and the living as well! Plus, you can develop your character’s skills to control those very rats and get them to kill for you. How cool is that?!

My favorite part of Dishnored is how the story and missions in the game changed according to the player’s decisions.

And so ends my list of rat-themed games to play in The Year of the Rat. There are a whole lot more rat-themed games out there to discover, but those are my absolute favorite. I really hope you liked this list, and let me know in the comments below if you have other games I should check out!
