Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes has been pumping out content consistently in the second half of 2020. The most notable content of the bunch is the revived Challenge Tier Rancor raid. After its relegation to being a simmable raid for established guilds, this iconic raid had been forgotten up until now. We check out some great teams for each phase of the SWGOH Challenge Tier Rancor raid.
Requirements
Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes generally releases harshly tuned content like Raids or Territory Battles for the whales or krakens of SWGOH. With that said, Challenge Tier Rancor isn’t quite accessible for free-to-play or newer players. The Relic 5 character requirements are a huge roadblock for the regular player.
Phase 1 – Pigs
Gamorrean Guards are a major roadblock for most players. The main Gamorrean Guard hits like a freight train, mowing down squads with three swift strikes. Your Teebo lead or Commander Luke Skywalker team won’t work here, so theory crafters had to get creative.
Chris “AhnaldT101” Ponicki got creative indeed, using Jawas under a Galactic Legends Rey lead, fueled by Wat Tambor. Jawas are slowly turning from meme to relevant in this new era of SWGOH, and have now shown viability in Territory Battles, Territory Wars, Grand Arena Championships, and apparently the Challenge Tier Rancor raid.
Team: GL Rey (lead), Wat Tambor, Chief Nebit, Jawa Engineer, and Jawa Scavenger.
Strategy: Wat Tambor gives Chief Nebit the Baktoid Shield Generator tech ability, and the Chiewab Medpac tech to GL Rey. You will have to constantly feed health from GL Rey, Wat Tambor, and Jawa Engineer over to Chief Nebit so he can continue to take damage from the Gamorrean Guards. Jawa Scavenger is purely here for its key passive Thermal Detonator (bomb) ability, stacking bombs for every hit the pigs land. This is a war of attrition, and this strat can take care of up to 15% of the Gamorrean Guard health pool.
FTP team: Padme (lead), General Kenobi, Jedi Knight Anakin, Ahsoka Tano, C3-PO.
Phase 2-3 – Rancor
Time for the Rancor! You won’t be able to solo it with the Teebo or CLS team like mentioned above, but everything still runs like how you remember it. The only major thing to note is that the Rancor can devour your Galactic Legends under most circumstances. There is no mercy from the Rancor.
Pre-game: Sacrifice a toon like Rose Tico to trigger the Devour from Rancor. This should start you off with a clean slate, avoiding handicapping your run off the bat.
Team: Galactic Legend Supreme Leader Kylo Ren (lead), Grand Admiral Thrawn, General Hux, Sith Trooper (the red kind), Hermit Yoda.
Strategy: Open with a stun using Kylo, prompting Sith Trooper to assist. Thrawn should go next, so swap Turn Meter with Kylo. That’s where you pop your SLKR AOE attack, which topples the Rancor. Put HYoda’s ability – Master’s Training – on Kylo, prompting another Kylo and Sith Trooper attack. After that, just keep feeding turn meter to Kylo so you can ramp up his Ultimate.
The key here is to get Kylo’s Ultimate fully charged before the toppled Rancor can stand up. Once the Rancor recovers, your toons will start to go down after the Rancor gets a few hits in. Just keep feeding TM to Kylo as often as you can so you can trigger another fully charged Ultimate.
If you can pop another Ultimate off before Rancor gets his Devour, you will be able to survive the insta-kill. Keep the run up until Kylo dies off, and you should walk away with 10-17% of the Rancor health pool.
FTP Team: Darth Vader (lead), Wat Tambor, Grand Admiral Thrawn, Emperor Palpatine, Darth Malak.
Strategy: DOTs team makes a comeback! Damage over time pops up with every Darth Vader Force Crush and Wat Tambor DOT assist. It’s just like the original Rancor raid Vader strategy. Keep the DOTs going, and wipe them with a huge Darth Vader Culling Blade. His lead will bring the DOTs debuff back with all its stacks, giving you an easy 7% as a FTP player.
Bonus FTP Team: Aurra Sing (lead), Greef Karga, Bossk, Jango Fett, Boba Fett
Strategy: The gate button/panel counts as an enemy. Call a mass assist on the button, which should topple Rancor and earn a contract payout/reward for the team. The next and only step is to absolutely unload into the Rancor as long as possible with mass assists. This is more of a kitchen sink strategy with a good FTP Bounty Hunter team you should have on hand. This team is good for 5%.
Phase 4 – Angry Rancor
Team: Whatever you have left.
Strategy: Throw everything you have left at it. Your good teams should’ve been used up for the Pigs and Phase 2 and 3 of the Rancor. Just use up the odds and ends that don’t fit a specific role into Phase 4 of the Rancor raid.
We’re still in the infancy of the SWGOH Challenge Tier Rancor raid, so tons of theory crafting is bound to do its work as more toons get unlocked in the game. While we can’t predict the future, the teams above are proven commodities. Work your way towards these teams to help your guild out and collect those coveted Relic 8 pieces.
2021 is slated to be a big year for Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes. Stay tuned to SQUAD for more SWGOH content!
