Fire Emblem Engage’s main protagonist is the successor to the family of Divine Dragons, reawoken after a millennium to defend a returning enemy – the Fell Dragon. While the protagonist canonically has some restrictions, character creation is still no issue for gamers looking to take up their swords.
The canon parts
Before we begin, it’s important to note that any cosmetic changes made to the protagonist are only visible while in the Somniel. You won’t be able to change your looks in battle, but something is better than nothing.
Canonically, the protagonist goes by the name Alear and has heterochromia – making one eye blue and one red – while also sporting a blue/red hair color split. It’s a unique look, to say the least, and as such cannot be altered.

While the protagonist’s name is supposed to be Alear, you can actually name them whatever you wish. While you’re at it, you can also pick their birthday and choose their gender. It’s worth a note that once chosen, you cannot change your mind, so really think about it.
The Somniel Boutique
Unfortunately, it’s going to take some work to get to a point where you can really start customizing your character(s). The Boutique opens once you return to the Somniel after clearing Chapter 5, which is when you can start your path to fashion greatness. It’s not hard to find the Boutique either, as it’s located right at the entrance to the base.
When it comes to outfits, there are tons of options to choose from, with more outfits being added to the catalog as you progress through the story. Players are free to dress up their character as they wish, mixing and matching clothing and accessories at will to achieve their own signature look. Not in the mood to go shopping or suffering from choice paralysis? That’s okay too! Players can unlock various “styles” belonging to previous Fire Emblem characters – provided they have the corresponding Amiibo, that is.
That’s all there is to it! All in all, Fire Emblem Engage’s character customization isn’t too intricate, but it’s nice to give your characters that bit of personalization between battles. As you’ll be spending plenty of time in the Somniel anyway, why not outfit your characters how you like?
