The Crown Tundra gives players a tough choice: should they choose Spectrier or Glastrier? These are two new legendary Pokemon, and Sword and Shield players can only pick one per save file.
Without knowing anything about them, how can you decide on what you want? Well, in this article I will be telling you everything about these horses. By the end you should have no problem deciding between Spectrier or Glastrier in Pokemon: Sword and Shield The Crown Tundra.
Spectrier typing and ability
Spectrier is a pure ghost type Pokemon with the new ability Grim Neigh. What this does, is increases Spectrier’s special attack whenever it knocks out a Pokemon. This creates a way to maximize on your opponent’s mistakes.
Being a ghost type is pretty good too, as it is immune to normal and fighting type moves, and only has a weakness to ghost and dark type moves. Additionally, most Pokemon take neutral damage from ghost type attacks, allowing Spectrier to hit many Pokemon for nice damage.
Spectrier stats and nature
Now let’s take a look at the most important part of every Pokemon: their stats. Spectrier has 100 hp, 65 attack, 60 defense, 145 special attack, 80 defense, and 130 speed. Just by looking at these stats you can tell this is a speedy Pokemon with a lot of special attacking power. However, it also has low defenses, meaning it is a glass cannon type of Pokemon.
The best natures for Spectrier will be Timid or Modest. Timid is great because it increases speed and decreases attack – while a Modest nature increases special attack and decreases attack to give Spectrier more power.
Now for the EV spreads you can use on Spectrier. You will want 252 special attack, 252 speed, and the last 4 could be placed in hp, defense, or special defense. Investing EVs in these stats makes use of Spectrier’s strengths. It is not really worth investing in other stats, as its low defenses will not make the EV investment worth it.
Unfortunately, Spectrier has a limited move pool with little coverage. The best special attacking moves it can learn are Shadow Ball, Dark Pulse, and Hyper Beam.
To give you some ideas on how to use Spectrier, consider it can fulfill a role as a Focus Sash Pokemon. Give it Protect, Taunt, Will-o-Wisp, and Shadow Ball with a Focus Sash. With this loadout you can deal big damage to something with a Shadow Ball, or cripple an opponent with Will-o-Wisp. The Focus Sash can allow you to get more use out of Spectrier by allowing it to live for another turn. Plus it could catch your opponent off guard and allow you to take advantage of the situation.
Another option for moves is Protect, Nasty Plot, Shadow Ball, and Dark Pulse. With this set you will want to boost Spectrier’s special attack with Nasty Plot, then try to sweep through your opponents. You could even Dynamax Spectrier to make it bulkier and get rid of the biggest threats your opponent has.
Other than that, you can try and pair Spectrier with support Pokemon to set it up for success.
Glastrier typing and ability
Glastrier is an ice type, which typically means having weak defensive typing. This is because ice types generally have bad base stats. But this time around things are different: Glastrier is a bulky and powerful Pokemon. Glastrier’s ability is Chilling Neigh, which increases its attack stat every time it knocks out a Pokemon.
Glastrier’s stats and nature
You are going to be impressed with Glastrier’s stats. It has 100 hp, 145 attack, 130 defense, 65 special attack, 110 special defense, and 30 speed. These stats are much more impressive than Spectrier, and allow Glastrier to do many more things. Right away I want to point out that Glastrier is definitely made for Trick Room, letting it move first instead of last in battle.
Glastrier also benefits from amazing defenses and a solid hp stat, allowing it to be incredibly bulky and absorb hits. Along with its tankyness, Glastrier also has raw physical power with that massive attack stat. It makes Glastrier a powerful physical attacker that is difficult to get rid of. If you manage to pull off Trick Room Glastrier, it can quickly snowball you to victory if your opponent has no counters for it.
Since Glastrier has so much potential, there are many options when trying to decide on an EV spread. You can go for raw power with 252 EVs in attack, 252 in hp, and 4 in defense. With this spread you can put on an Assault Vest to boost Glastrier’s special defense. This will also make up for the fact you have no special defense EVs. Another item you can have Glastrier hold is the Weakness Policy, which can boost its attack even higher.
Feel free to test out other EV spreads as well, as Glastrier has a lot of potential. You can make a bulky one with 252hp, 252 defense, and 4 special defense. Then give it an Assault Vest to make an extremely tanky Pokemon. With this spread you would have to rely on Glacial Neigh to boost your attack. Another option is to split up your Evs. However you will always want to max out attack if you want pure power.
As for the nature, you always want one that reduces speed. If you are going for power, then have a Brave nature, since this will reduce speed but increase attack. If you would rather have defense, then go for Relaxed, and for special defense get a Sassy nature.
Unlike Spectrier, Glastrier has access to many useful moves and has coverage. The moves you will want to consider when using Glastrier are Icicle Crash, Protect, High Horsepower, Smart Strike, Stomping Tantrum, Megahorn, Body Press, Crunch, Superpower, Close Combat, Swords Dance, Taunt or Heavy Slam. A good standard moveset for a physical attacking Glastrier is Protect, Icicle Crash, Close Combat, and High Horsepower.
I want to talk about the usefulness of Glastrier’s moves. Currently, fairy types are commonly used, so having a steel type move is a big bonus. Heavy Slam is a great option as it does more damage depending on how much the user outweight the target. Glastrier weighs a whopping 1,763 lbs, or 800 kg, and will easily outweight any fairy type it faces. In fact, Glastrier will outweigh most Pokemon you face. It is even heavier than Tyranitar and Rhyperior, which are two popular rock type Pokemon currently being used. Both are also weak to steel type attacks.
For a defensive Glastrier you will definitely want Body Press, as this move does more damage the higher your defense is. Swords Dance would also be perfect on a defensive Glastrier, as it allows you to raise your attack by two stages.
Glastrier also has great Dynamax potential. With fighting max moves you can further boost your attack, with steel you can increase your defenses, and ground max moves will increase your special defense. Each of these boosts the strongest stats on Glastrier, definitely making it a force to be reckoned with.
There you have it, everything about Spectrier and Glastrier in Pokemon Sword and Shield The Crown Tundra. Glastrier is definitely the better Pokemon to choose. It has power, bulk, and low speed to fit perfectly in Trick Room teams.
That’s not to say Spectrier is useless, as it has high speed and special attack. It will just require more thought in who Spectrier’s team members are, and how to set it up for success.
