It feels like Turbo Dark has never not been great. Ever since Darkrai-GX came out in Burning Shadows over three years ago, the deck has been one of the best decks in the game. As long as Dark Patch and Darkrai-GX are legal in Expanded Pokemon TCG, the Turbo Dark deck isn’t going anywhere.
With the addition of Greninja & Zoroark-GX to Pokemon TCG Online, this deck has yet another attacker capable of doing tons of damage, and as expected, the deck has been doing very well in Expanded Tournaments lately.
The deck features a bunch of pretty interesting mechanics that no other deck has. It has Pokemon that can resurrect themselves, fetch Energies from the Discard Pile, and even straight-up eliminate the opponent if they have any status effect. In this guide, I’ll be taking you through the Turbo Dark Expanded deck for Pokemon TCG Online, sample gameplay, and an explanation of what role each card plays in the deck.

Here’s an overview of the deck. Greninja & Zoroark-GX and Darkrai-GX are the main attackers – with Guzzlord as a backup attacker, and Darkrai-EX and Weavile-GX provide excellent utility.
We also have the Expanded staples, along with Sky Field – just because this deck can fall short on Bench space. Unlike the Snorlax and Zoroark deck, Sky Field isn’t helping you buff your attacks in any way. Colress is another card-draw Support and Field Blower helps you knock off your opponent’s Tool Cards or Stadium cards.
Here’s some gameplay featuring the Turbo Dark deck in Versus matches:
Greninja & Zoroark-GX and Dark Patch are the backbone of the deck
Greninja & Zoroark-GX’s Dark Pulse is the best attack in this deck.
Dark Pulse (30+): This attack does 30 more damage times the amount of Darkness Energy attached to all of your Pokémon.
Your goal is to get as much Energy as you can in play. Max Elixir and Dark Patch make it pretty easy to accelerate Energy onto your Pokemon, and it’s pretty common to get a 150+ attack on your first turn.
Darkrai-GX can resurrect itself and has an amazing GX attack
Darkrai-GX is one of the most interesting cards in Pokemon TCG Online because of its ability:
Restoration: Once during your turn (before your attack), if this Pokémon is in your discard pile, you may put it onto your Bench. Then, attach a Darkness Energy card from your discard pile to this Pokémon.
You don’t even need to Ultra Ball Darkrai-GX and an Energy to do this. You can simply use Battle Compressor to discard them from your deck.
Along with this, Darkrai-GX also has a GX attack that instantly eliminates your opponent if they have a Special Condition. People never see this attack coming. To add Status effects, we have Hypnotoxic Laser, that will make your opposing Pokemon Poisoned, with a chance of putting it to Sleep as well.
The 130-damage Dark Cleave attack is pretty weak, but you are rarely in a position where you have no option.
Darkrai-EX gives you free Retreats
Instead of using something like Switch, this deck uses Darkrai-EX, whose ability negates the Retreat Cost of all of your Pokemon that have at least one Dark Energy attached.
Float Stone is in this deck just for those instances where you don’t have Darkrai-EX out, or have it out and don’t want to waste Energy just for the Retreat.
Weavile-GX can shift your Energy around as many times as you want
The deck has two more interesting cards – Weavile-GX and Guzzlord. Weavile-GX’s Ability lets you switch around Energy as often as you want each turn. This isn’t limited to one Pokemon per turn, which is what makes this card so good.
This ability also makes Guzzlord viable. Red Banquet hits just for 120, but lets you take an extra Prize card if you get a Knock Out. That’s 4 Prize cards if you get a VMAX or a Tag Team. This is another move that opponents just can’t foresee, because Guzzlord can be in your hand on one turn, and in the Active Spot with 4 Energy on it the next.
Not having to permanently assign Energy to a Pokemon is an invaluable advantage. This, coupled with the incredible Energy acceleration that the deck provides, makes Turbo Dark one of the best decks in the Expanded format. It consistently wins tournaments, can easily get you Win Streaks in Versus, and doesn’t really have any threats aside from Coalossal VMAX decks.
