Brand, the carry support | League of Legends Guide

If you don’t like playing as a support in League of Legends you might just want to try Brand. He is the kind of champion that is mostly used on mid lane and can also be brought to bot as a support. This might seem weird at first, especially if you haven’t been playing for all that long, but it is very viable.

And quite honestly, if you can’t or don’t like playing as a supportive character he could potentially be your savior.

When should you play this build?

Basically any time you get into a game and you get the stuck in support role against your will.

Brand has a couple of skillshot abilities that need to be practiced for them to be successful in League of Legends. The rest of his kit is quite easy to use, so he is noob-friendly. Although, I recommend thinking twice before getting into a ranked game if you don’t have much practice with him. It’s great if you don’t want to dodge, you just shouldn’t do this intentionally.

The build I will show you today is one that is intended for those who don’t play support typically. It’s easy to use and doesn’t require any skill, so you will be able to help your team even if you’re not used to the support role.

What items does Brand need?

  • Spellthief’s Edge -> Shard of True Ice
  • Boots of Mobility
  • Liandry’s Torment
  • Rylai’s Crystal Scepter
  • Zhonya’s Hourglass

As an AP champion your main goal will be to deal magic damage. To do this you will need these core items. And yes, the Boots of Mobility are part of that, because as a support you have to run to every fight possible and help out as much as you can.

You will need one additional item – although you will also need to have a ward with you at all times before completing your build. If you are inexperienced, I suggest you don’t get items that have active powers, like Twin Shadows. They are useful, but only if you remember to use them often enough.

For your final items you can go in two directions from here: aggressive or pushy. For aggression you can build some extra damage or magic penetration, with items like Void Staff and Rabadon’s Deathcap. It helps with teamfights. As for the pushy build, you need Morellonomicon. With it you will be able to clear waves better, and if the enemy team is careless, you can just push the sidelanes in and distract them for a while.

Which runes does Brand need?

League of Legends Brand guide

The most important runes will be Absolute Focus and Scorch. These will provide you with some extra damage, which can often be the difference between killing an enemy and them running away.

Don’t forget about Perfect Timing either – the Stopwatch it gives you is really valuable in the early game. It can easily save you from dying once.

When to switch it up

Generally speaking this build is very aggressive to begin with. But when you go up against one of the counters of Brand the entire game of League of Legends will turn upside down for you. You will need to switch to defensive mode real quick otherwise you will be beaten into the ground. Draw back when they attack and don’t try to initiate.

If they stay relevant in the late game or someone else becomes too powerful you can build Banshee’s Veil. Although, if you fall back with Brand you are almost surely lost.

How to play as Brand

As aggressively as possible. Use your Pillar of Flame as often as you can, although you should watch out for your mana in the early game. The only thing you should not be doing in terms of aggression, is pushing. Your Sear can to stun enemies, which is useless if you are under their turret. Instead, tell your ADC to either stay even or get pushed in. That way you will have an easy advantage.

If you are a decent Brand player, you should have 2 kills by the end of the early game. And your ADC should have at least that much. Don’t take everything for yourself, but make sure that you get enough gold too. Build your core and begin abusing other lanes whenever you can. Roam to mid first, and don’t let the enemy bot lane do so until the 15 minute mark. That way they can’t get back into the game. If you do well, you can make the enemy mid laner fear you and take over their territory as well.

By the late game your Brand should look like a proper monster to everyone on the other team, with tons of damage a just a bit of dangerous crowd control. And you’re still a generally good support. Almost like an Ambulance Soraka.
