I don’t know about you, but my favorite games tend to be the ones I can enjoy with friends. For fans of teamwork and cooperation, I have put together a list of the best co-op games coming out in 2021.

The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes

House of Ashes is the latest game in The Dark Pictures Anthology series, following Man of Medan and Little Hope. This series of horror games is one of the best co-op games currently available, and House of Ashes should keep up with this tradition.

The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes is set in the Arabian desert, where the ruins of a Sumerian temple hide a terrible secret. The game supports both local and online co-op, so you don’t have to tackle it alone.

Valheim

2021 is just getting started, but Valheim is already asserting itself as one of the best co-op games of the year. While it is a survival game at its core, Valheim’s full potential can only be experience when playing with friends.

Car crashes, explosions, and cute girls. This isn’t the latest Michael Bay movie, but Destruction AllStars, a vehicle-based combat game. Wrecking cars would be less fun if you have to do it alone, which is why Destruction AllStars supports online multiplayer.

Rainbow Six Quarantine

Initially scheduled for 2020, Rainbow Six Quarantine suffered standard issue COVID-19 development delays, and is now scheduled to (hopefully) release in 2021. The newest entry in Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six series has been under lockdown, and there is very little information available about it at this point. We do know the most important thing, however: it will be a 3-player PvE co-op shooter.

The trailer above is the only glimpse at Rainbow Six Quarantine we have to this date. As with all other Rainbow Six games, Rainbow Six Quarantine will be a multiplayer FPS, and that is pretty much all we know.

Zombie lovers, this one is for you! Back 4 Blood is the spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead, the iconic co-op game from 2008. If you are new to the franchise, the trailer below should give you a pretty clear idea of what you’re in for.

Back 4 Blood places cooperation at its core. Against the massive amount of zombies chasing your team, you have no chance of survival alone. Back 4 Blood will also feature a new card system with which players can influence the mission they are playing in various ways, including loot, monster encounters, and abilities.

Outriders

Outriders is a co-op RPG shooter set in a dark vision of humanity’s future attempts at surviving on a new planet. Players can choose from one of four classes, each with its unique weapons, abilities, and skill treets. The gameplay is centered around constant combat encounters – interrupted only to pick up new quests and craft better gear – as you make your way through a mysterious story on the hostile planet of Enoch.

The demo of Outriders is currently available if you want to give this new co-op shooter a try before its official release on April 1. Note that your progress in the demo will carry over to the full game.

Skull & Bones

Skull & Bones is the new Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, minus the Assassin’s Creed part. Ubisoft is taking a new shot at a pirate game, with adventures on the high seas and intense naval warfare.

You can play Skull & Bones solo, but a real pirate is best surrounded by their crew. If you liked Sea of Thieves, you should keep an eye out for Skull & Bones.

Hood: Outlaws & Legends

Hood: Outlaws & Legends is both a PvP and a PvE co-op game. Each mission will put you and your friends against another stack of 4 players in a fight to steal a secret treasure. Not only do you have to face the guards to steal the key to the treasure room, but you also have to avoid the other players on their own quest for the same treasure.

As you have to worry both about the guards and other players while you are searching for the treasure, cooperation is key to success in Hood: Outlaws & Legends. This medieval, violent world hides many treasures, and you will have to team up with your friends to find them all.

Whether you want to play with someone on your couch or across the world, there are plenty of great co-op games coming out in 2021. The genre seems to be having a strong resurgence, which is awesome if you ask me.
