The seasons are about to change in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. With Spring approaching in June, some critters are going to go away. If you want to finish up your Critterpedia, make sure to catch them before it is too late. Otherwise you will have to wait a few months for them to come back. Here is what is going away for the Northern Hemisphere at the end of May. (And If you are in the Southern Hemisphere, here’s what’s happening there.)
I am going to start off with the bugs, since only one bug is leaving us. This is one you will be happy to see leave: the Mole Cricket. These little guys are common spawns that like to play hide and seek. They play their signature sound, and you have to dig holes to find them. This quickly becomes a pain when you are trying to catch other bugs, since they take up a spawning spot. So you have to clear them for the game to spawn more bugs to catch.
If you have not caught a Mole Cricket yet, I will give you some tips on how to find them. You absolutely should use headphones when hunting down these guys, since you find them by listening for the sound they produce, and this sound is very specific. With headphones on you can slowly walk around the area you think the Mole Cricket is in, and you won’t miss it.
The sound will be the loudest in the spot they are burrowed under. As soon as you walk one spot to the left or right, the sound will slightly decrease. This small sound distinction is difficult to hear through speakers, so that is why I recommend using headphones.
Mole Crickets can spawn at any time of the day, and are common so you should have no issues catching one.
Next we have the fish going out of season. In the rivers, the Loach is going away, which I am sure many of you will be happy about. This fish is common in rivers and has a size two shadow. You have probably caught this fish many times while searching for rarer specimens.
The next fish leaving is the Golden Trout from clifftop rivers, and the Oarfish from the ocean. Both of these fish are rare, with the Oarfish being the rarest of the two. My advice to catch these elusive fish is the same for both: go to islands with your Nook Miles Tickets and bring fish bait. The islands you go to with Nook Miles Tickets have higher spawn rates for fish, giving you better odds at finding rare fish.
For the Golden Trout, you can go to any island with a clifftop river on your search. This fish is only a size 3, and it spawns between 4 P.M. and 9 A.M. – so you will probably want to leave at night to catch the Golden Trout. It should not take too long to catch one, just keep scaring away all the river fish you do not need.
Bringing fish bait can be helpful because some islands have trouble spawning clifftop fish. Before you spend too much time on an island, make sure to catch one fish first, since there is an island that only spawns trash in the water, and you would not want to waste your time on a trash island.
As for the Oarfish, any island will do as well. But if you are having a lot of trouble, you can try and find Big Fish Island. This island will only spawn fish that are size 4 or bigger, and it has no clifftop rivers. This makes it the best place to find the Oarfish. Make sure to bring lots of fish bait – at least 20!
Ocean fish are harder to scare off since they can spawn far from shore, which is the reason why you want fish bait. The Oarfish is the only size 6 fish in the ocean right now, and can spawn at any time, so you will know it if you see it. That said, distinguishing a 5 from a 6 can be difficult, so always catch the fish if you are unsure.
