5 great MMORPGs to play on Nintendo Switch

MMORPGs are a perfect fit for the Nintendo Switch. Pick a medieval, sci-fi, cartoon or realistic universe, and grind powerful gear, defeat difficult opponents, and have fun with your friends and allies: all while never leaving the comfort of your sofa.

But deciding on a new MMORPG to play on the Nintendo Switch is not an easy task. Many games offer a large open world to explore and hundreds of quests to keep you busy. How to find the best MMORPG on the Nintendo Switch, one worth spending hours, creating a new character, and starting a new adventurous online life in? To help you find the right game for you, we handpicked the 5 of the best MMORPGs on the Nintendo Switch.

Dauntless is a cooperative MMORPG with mechanics similar to Monster Hunter. It gives players a lot of customization options for the character, and lets them wield distinctive weapons as they face massive wild beasts in instanced hunting grounds. The gear system lets players adapt their fighting style to their own gameplay preferences, from frantic timing based combos to strategic min-maxing. There is also a hunter-gatherer mechanic: while you are out hunting, you can collect ingredients used to craft various consumables back in the hub town.

You can play Dauntless solo, or group up with friends or random players online to take on more challenging hunts.

This game is the first project of the Phoenix Labs studio, founded by Blizzard, Bioware, and Riot Games alumni. Dauntless has over 15 million registered players across the Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Players can gather no matter the console they are using, as Dauntless has cross-play between platforms.

This one rides the thin line between MMORPG and a looter shooter, but it’s about space ninjas so we are giving it a pass. Warframe puts you in the shoes of a Tenno, a race of fighters guided by a mysterious entity called the Lotus. The game takes place in a fully realized sci-fi universe with spacecraft, planets to explore, and lore explaining the deep conflict players are thrust into as they enter the game. Warframe has a ton of content to sink your teeth into.

If the idea of a MMORPG FPS available on the Nintendo Switch hasn’t convinced you yet, Warframe has one more key argument: it is free to play. The in-game purchases are not necessary to move forward in the game, even if they speed the grinding time.

Temtem is a Pokemon-like MMORPG set in an archipelago filled with cute creatures. Start your adventure as a Temtem tamer, explore the six islands of the Airborn Archipelago, and catch Temtems to build your team. Trade your creatures with friends, battle other players, or defeat the eight Dojo Masters to become the ultimate Temtem Trainer. Sound familiar? Good, it’s supposed to.

More than just a pale copy of Pokemon, Temtem provides a large open world and an immersive experience. Customize your character, play with friends in the co-op adventure, or discover the story campaign to defeat the Belsoto clan. Temtem also includes a housing system, so players can own their own house at Atoll Row and decorate it with a large variety of purchasable furniture and decor.

Dragon Quest X

Dragon Quest X is an MMO set in the Dragon Quest universe. The game offers the possibility of playing as six different races: Ogre, Weddie, Human, Elf, Puklip, or Dwarf. In addition to these six races, six vocations are available from the start of the game: warrior, mage, priest, martial artist, thief, and troubadour.

Dragon Quest X combines the classic elements of the series with key MMORPG features. You can freely discover the open world, complete various quests, or group with up to three different players to fight a powerful enemy. You can even borrow an offline character to play as a NPC, so you can defeat bosses without forming a full party.

Dragon Quest X also includes a job system to craft various items, as well as trade skills and guilds. The game is cross-platform, too.

DC Universe Online

It’s been a a great couple of decades for fans of superheroes and comic books, and DC Universe Online is the perfect Switch game for living out your heroic fantasies. This action-packed MMORPG lets you dive into the DC universe and create your own hero with a wide variety of superpowers. Roam the streets of Gotham City or Metropolis in a massive world to explore, grind end-game gear, and fight against other players in PvP mode.

The character customization is deep enough, letting you choose your appearance and main superpower. You can either be a hero or a villain and decide on your own path. Raids, seasonal events, and PvP battles provide plenty to do for dedicated players who want to invest a lot of time in the game.
