Greetings, Programs! If you’re lucky enough to have played the original Resident Evil 3 back in the day, you have fond memories (or sweat-inducing nightmares) of Nemesis popping out of nowhere to make your life miserable.
He was like Friday the 13’s Jason Voorhees on steroids. Plus, he was essentially immune to your pathetic bullets. Also, he had a freaking rocket launcher. Because why not, puny human? Ahhh… Good times.
If that sounds like your idea of fun (or terror), you’re really going to enjoy (or fear) the upcoming Resident Evil 3 remake. Now, in addition to still being a bullet-soaking monster with a rocket launcher, Nemesis is getting a serious upgrade in the brains department.

What’s that? The only thing that kept him from stomping you into the ground was the fact that he wasn’t terribly bright? Sucks to be you, buddy. Better start thinking up some new strategies because the new Nemesis will, according to Capcom, be using an updated version of the AI that controlled Mr. X (Tyrant) in the 2019 Resident Evil 2 remake. Good thing running is an option. Most of the time. Don’t forget, Nemesis can follow you.
OPM also reports that unlike in the original Resident Evil 3, Nemesis appearances will not be scripted. He’s just happily wandering around Raccoon City, looking for you. That means there will be absolutely no rhyme or reason to when he’ll show up and ruin your whole day. Hey, they don’t call him “Nemesis” for nothing.
Another cool detail about Nemesis: he’s apparently been recreated in the real world so he could be scanned via photogrammetry. I really need to see the model. Please let it be life-size…
But, wait! Resident Evil 3 gets even better! (or worse?)
But lest you think all the changes center on Mr. Scary Pants, let me assure you, this is not so! The Resident Evil 3 remake has much more in store, although some of it might not be to your liking.
The game itself is much bigger. While it is not a true free-roaming title, it’s no longer quite as linear. You will be able to get to the hospital, different shops, the local newspaper, and a gas station; none of which were accessible in the original. On the other hand, Mercenaries Mode is gone (that bonus unlocked after you beat the game), as are the multiple endings. Whether or not this is a good thing depends on your perspective.
If you feel multiple endings increase the replay value, taking them away is seriously disappointing. If, on the other hand, you hate beating a game and getting a “bad” ending (good god, my first run through on Silent Hill left me empty and depressed for days…), this is great for you. I’m of two minds on this. I suppose it depends on how hard it is to get all of the endings. There’s only so much time I want to put into a single-player game before it’s time to move on to something new.
As for Mercenaries Mode, the good news is that Carlos the merc will now be a playable character with his own unique area of the game to explore, so we’re not really losing anything there. Oh, and did I mention there’s going to be a multiplayer mode in the vein of Dead by Daylight? Yeah, that’s a thing that’s happening, too.
Resident Evil 3 is due out on Apr. 3 and if you enjoy being scared silly by giant mutant murder machines, Nemesis will be waiting for you.
