100 Thieves triumph over Team Liquid in LCS 2022 Spring Split

After witnessing Team Liquid Academy claim the LCS Proving Grounds title, it was the turn of the main rosters to clash against each other during the third week of the Spring Split playoffs. Unlike their academy teammates, Team Liquid wasn’t able to secure the game 5 victory and in the end, it was 100 Thieves who triumphed.

Things didn’t look great at the start for 100 Thieves as they quickly found themselves trailing behind 2-0 after the first two games of this best of five. Team Liquid quickly shut them down in the first game and in less than 23 minutes. The duo of Søren “Bjergsen” Bjerg and Lucas “Santorin” Tao Kilmer Larsen terrorized the rift on Twisted Fate and Jarvan 4, but it was their ad carry, Steven “Hans sama” Liv that put the final nail in the coffin after gaining a quadra kill in the closing moments of the game.

The nightmare for the reigning champions continued in game 2 as they quickly found themselves behind on objectives despite having a much closer early game, with Team Liquid grabbing three Dragons in the first 25 minutes. On top of that, 100 Thieves mid-laner Felix “Abbedagge” Braun suffered the wrath of Bjergsen and the rest of Team Liquid and finished the 2nd duel with a score of 1 kill, 7 deaths. Once again, Hans Sama demonstrated the extent of his skills by having another deathless game and another quadra kill to secure a 2-0 lead for his team.

With the scenario of a 3-0 sweep in the cards, 100 Thieves adapted their strategy by putting their top-laner, Kim “Ssumday” Chan-ho on Ornn and Closer on Jarvan 4. The adaptation of the draft allowed Abbedage and Ian Victor “FBI” Huang to run wild and deal damage on Team Liquid. This shift in champions select unlocked Ssumday and the rest of 100 Thieves to outperform their opponents to force a game 5.

The reigning LCS champions will have an opportunity to go back to back as this victory confirmed their place in the finals presented in Houston. Meanwhile, Team Liquid will have to go through the lower bracket to have a chance at redemption. Their journey will start in a showdown against the winner of Evil Geniuses and Cloud 9.
