There are some good news for fans of the Diablo and Overwatch franchises. After the success of Castlevania on Netflix, it seems like a Blizzard IP might be next in line for an adaptation. We soon might get animated shows based on the Overwatch and Diablo franchises.
The speculation arose from a single clue. Co-president of Activision-Blizzard Studios, Nick van Dyk, updated his LinkedIn profile to include some new information. The profile now includes an animated Diablo series, as well as an animated Overwatch series.
LinkedIn and Twitter confirmation
The profile says, “Executive producer of Diablo, a TV adaptation of Blizzard Entertainment’s IP, rendered in anime style. The show is currently in pre-production for distribution worldwide through Netflix”. Fans of the Diablo franchise were already given hope for a Netflix adaption. Hellboy writer, Andrew Cosby, was brought into the talk for writing the adaption in 2018.
Cosby confirmed his involvement in a tweet saying, “I guess I can confirm I am indeed in final talks to write and show-run the new DIABLO animated series for Activision and Netflix.” He confirmed this in 2018, shortly after the rumors of his involvement started.
When it comes to the potential Overwatch animated series, a lot less is known about the entire project. The profile only says, “With my creative partner, developed and sold an animated series based Blizzard’s Overwatch franchise.” Because of Blizzard’s involvement with Netflix for the Diablo series, it would be a safe guess to say that they’re also working on the Overwatch animated series with Netflix. Because of the lack of mention of a distributor, we can assume that the series isn’t as far into development as the Diablo series.
Capitalizing on the hype
Diablo and Overwatch are set to release new games in the next few years with Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2. It’s no wonder that Blizzard is capitalizing on the anticipation of these major sequels with more stories outside of the games. Neither Netflix nor Blizzard has officially confirmed anything, so there’s no guarantee that either project will get off the ground. Hopefully, these two games will eventually see themselves to our screens.
