Uncharted and Journey are free on PlayStation 4 as part of Play at Home initiative

Sony has announced a new initiative -Play at Home – encouraging PlayStation 4 owners to stay inside during the COVID-19 pandemic by giving them two free games. Two great free games, that is.

Announced on the PlayStation Blog, SIE President and CEO Jim Ryan revealed that Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Journey would be free to download. Starting tomorrow, PlayStation 4 owners can access the games digitally through the PlayStation Store. This offer will be in effect until May 5. Ryan noted that a PSN subscription wasn’t required and that once redeemed, the games are yours for keeps. If you’ve been conditioned to free AAA games by the Epic Games Store, this is like that.

Naughty Dog’s Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection is a bit of a three-in-one package. PlayStation 4 owners can experience the remastered Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. The Uncharted series has been an acclaimed franchise for Naughty Dog for more than a decade.

If you need even more Nathan Drake in your life, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is available through PS+ this month.

Thatgamecompany’s Journey is the second game featured in the Play at Home initiative. Journey initially launched on PlayStation 3 back in 2012. However, given the current circumstances, the game’s themes should leave a lasting impact on you. Despite the seemingly isolating experience, Journey‘s story is very fitting and emotional.

The Play at Home initiative doesn’t only extend to the PlayStation 4 player base. Sony is also assisting indie studios affected by the pandemic. Ryan also announced in the blog post that SIE is setting up a $10 million fund to support their independent studio partners. Ryan’s post notes that developers are vital to the gaming community, and that their hardship during the current crisis is relevant.

This gesture made by Sony to its development partners and supporting community is quite wholesome. As members of the gaming community are being affected in numerous ways, Sony’s Play at Home initiative should help occupy the minds of players, and put the minds of dev teams at ease at least a little bit.

Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Journey will be available to download on April 15, through May 5.
