Overwatch 2 will release in late 2020 – or at least it should

Since the announcement of Overwatch 2 at Blizzcon 2019, fans are still left in the dark as to when the new expansion release date will be. With that being said, a recently removed tweet from Playstation Brazil indicated that the game might potentially launch sooner than we think.

When translated, Playstation’s tweet said “2020 will be the year Overwatch 2 comes to PS4, and to get ready, we talked to some of its developers, who gave us hot information”. There has not been any explanation as to why exactly the tweet has been removed, and Sony has not made any comments on the matter.

Whether or not this was just a mistake made by Playstation, this got me theorizing about potential release dates for Overwatch 2.

So when is the release date for Overwatch 2?

I think it’s safe to assume that we won’t be getting Overwatch 2 for most of 2020. This is because the game is still in its early stages of development. Blizzard will also be putting most of the spotlight on Overwatch League Season 3 starting next month.

However, there is an optimistic possibility that Overwatch 2 will be released in late 2020.

Why? For a few reasons.

Firstly, because of Blizzcon 2020. Jeff Kaplan made it clear that Blizzard won’t be focusing too much on special events anymore, to instead work on Overwatch 2 development. This was made evident when players discovered that Archives 2020 would not be an event this year. Although it is ambitious to think the game would be finished by next Blizzcon, it isn’t out of the question. At the very least, fans will most likely get to see where Blizzard is in the development process.

Secondly, I think it would be a good idea to have Overwatch League Season 4 played on Overwatch 2. Releasing the new content a few months before Season 4 of the Overwatch League would give time for pros to learn the new maps, heroes, and content. Overwatch 2 would also receive a lot of exposure, which is always a good thing.

Finally, it wouldn’t make a lot of sense to drag on the release date. Currently, we know that in-game events won’t be getting much attention. I also doubt many new heroes will be released, as most heroes will probably be released alongside Overwatch 2.

Fans are excited about the new content that Overwatch 2 brings to the table. Though, if Blizzard pushes the release date too far, it could potentially create a lot of frustration. To keep their base happy, it would make sense for Blizzard to make late 2020 the goal.

In the end, there’s no way of knowing for sure what Blizzard has planned for us. Hopefully, more details on the topic get released soon.
