Our totally unbiased PlayStation State of Play highlights – Sept. 13, 2022

Sony’s surprise PlayStation State of Play showcase on September 13th left us with some exciting announcements…and some questions. Here are some of the highlights of this State of Play!

Tekken 8

An announcement for Tekken 8 on its own is exciting, but the game itself (at least in the trailer) looks incredible. The scenery in this trailer is intense, the action is fluid and the improved graphical fidelity and details are more than apparent. There are also a whole lot of particles, as you may have noticed. Now of course this is only an announcement trailer, but we’ll be eagerly waiting to see what else comes of this new entry in the Tekken series.

Like a Dragon: Ishin!

As you may have guessed, Like a Dragon: Ishin! Is the next in a long line of Yakuza games! This spinoff takes place in 1867 but brings back a lot of familiar faces – somehow.

Like a Dragon: Ishin! is actually a remake of the original game which was released in 2014 but never actually hit the western world. This is great for Yakuza fans and samurai lovers alike. Oh, I forgot to mention, you’re a badass samurai in this game. Also, you have a revolver. It just works.

Oh, and speaking of Samurai…

Rise of the Ronin

Rise of the Ronin looks like if Ghost of Tsushima and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice had a torrid love affair with Assassin’s Creed (pre-Origins). Rise of the Ronin is, set in 1860’s Japan and should prove to be an exciting – and lethal – experience. This “sprawling action-Rpg” will be a PS5 exclusive, but on the bright side, you have until 2024 to get one.

Demeo

A personal favorite for me, Demeo’s PSVR2 port was announced, and soon you’ll be able to recreate your favorite tabletop RPG experiences with all your friends! Well, the ones that have PSVR2, anyway. If you’re a fan of tabletop games, but don’t have friends that can congregate regularly, Demeo is a great way to get your pals together! It’s also great if you don’t have many “real world” friends, but we won’t be unpacking that right now.

Pacific Drive

Ever wanted to drive around a dystopian world, escaping sometimes beautiful, sometimes haunting landscapes while trying to survive whatever the living f**k is going on with the weather and… giant earth sawblades? Uh, yeah… me too I suppose. Well, Pacific Drive seems to satisfy just that – weirdly specific – urge. Pacific Drive is the debut game from Ironwood Studios and is shaping up to be an awesome and atmospheric experience. It kind of reminds me of Firewatch… but if everything was so much more dangerous.

God of War: Ragnarök finally got something!

Two months prior to Ragnarök’s release, we’ve gotten a (pretty awesome) story trailer and honestly, just watch it.

Yeah, just… yeah.

Also Sony announced a  limited edition God of War: Ragnarök themed controller if you’re into that.

That’s it for now! (No we’re not going to talk about PlayStation Stars)

These were only some of the highlights from this State of Play. You can check out the full live stream in case you missed it or just wanted to rewatch it for your own enjoyment. Tons of new games are in the pipeline for PlayStation, and hopefully, we’ll see quite a bit more before the end of the year.
