Pokemon has announced an update for Sword and Shield that you do not want to miss! Why? Because it will put the start of a new story line in your game. This is the introduction to the first DLCs to Pokemon, The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra.
After you have updated your game, make your way to Wedgehurst Station to start the introduction. I do not want to spoil any of the story for you, but make sure to have some spare pokeballs on hand!
This update has also added the expansion pass to the menu of the game:
There is also a special in-game event going on from now until early February. Game Freak did not specify the date the event ends. While the event is going, you have a higher chance of encountering Gigantamax Coalossal and Flapple in Pokemon Sword. Meanwhile, in Pokemon Shield there is a higher chance of encountering Gigantamax Lapras and Appletun.
Each of these Pokemon has special Gigantamax moves. Coalossal’s move is called G-Max Volcalith – after use, it continues to do minor damage to all effected Pokemon for 4 turns. Flapple’s move is called G-Max Tartness. It reduces the target’s evasiveness. Lapras’ move is G-Max Resonance and it sets up Aurora Veil, which reduces damage for 5 turns. And Appletun’s move is G-Max Sweetness, which heals allies of their status conditions.
To take part in this event, you have to update the game in a different way. Go to mystery gift, then select “Get the Wild Area News”. Your game will then sync up to the event, and you will be able to find these Gigantamax Pokemon easier. Since they are event Pokemon, they can appear in event dens. So if you are looking for one specifically, just know it does not only spawn in its normal den.
This Pokemon update event does have an impact on the competitive scene, too. It indicates that in the next season, these Gigantamax Pokemon will be allowed in competitive play. Currently, only the Gigantamax Pokemon that have had events to distribute them are allowed in competitive play. So each time an event increases spawn rates of Gigantamax Pokemon, they are then legal to use in the next season. This means that it’s time to grab those competitive Gigantamax Pokemon!
