Bionicle: Quest for Mata Nui may be the perfect Bionicle game

I'm not saying I'm hyped... but I'm hyped

If like me you grew up playing with Bionicle and watching the movies over and over, then you’re likely excited about Bionicle: The Quest for Mata Nui. It’s a fan-made free RPG that puts you in the… uh shoes – I guess — of our heroes, the Toa.

This is especially exciting since the last we heard of the Bionicle franchise was its short revival in 2015, five years after its cancellation. Mata Nui: The Online Game is widely regarded as the most iconic Bionicle gaming experience. There were also a few console entries starting back in 2003, and while those were good for the time, it’ll be nice to have an updated experience.

By the way, I really should mention that Mata Nui : The Online Game is still playable here.

I’ll be honest, Quest for Mata Nui looks amazing. It’s been in development for six years and it shows – the passion and the quality are both apparent and endearing. The game looks beautiful, detailed and polished. And the best part? It’s going to be multiplayer. You and your friends can venture on your quest together, each one of you seemingly taking up a different role. To those hardcore Bionicle communities out there, this game is definitely for you. All this Bionicle talk has gotten me all excited, and I’m not alone.

This announcment gave me life like the Ignika gave life to Mata Nui from bioniclememes

The game has you take up the role of various Toa heroes. “Set during the first year of Bionicle, it follows the story of the Toa on their quest to collect the 6 great masks of power to rid the island Mata Nui of the evil influence called Makuta.” And if as a fan that doesn’t bring back fond memories, then it sounds like you need a nostalgia trip.

When I first heard of the game I’ll admit I was a little wary. I mean, Bionicle had been out of the public eye for a while, and this game seemingly appeared from nowhere. Of course, I was looking at how this would stack up to other RPGs, but that’s not the point. This is a passion project, and a pretty good looking one at that. If six years of work doesn’t scream passion to you, I’m not sure what does.

Bionicle: Quest for Mata Nui - 12 Minute Gameplay Walkthrough (Fan Made Open-World RPG Game)

In their gameplay demo you get to see more of how the game functions, as well as a peak at the landscape. A good thing to note is that this world will be quite fleshed out. Instead of just questing from one point to the next, there seem to be side missions and options for exploration. The combat system is smooth and looks to function similarly to that of The Witcher and other recent RPGs.

The title is definitely garnering a lot of attention, and the devs are posting regular updates on the state of the game, as well as shouting out other developers for similar works.

I’m excited to see where this goes, and I hope it does well. And who knows? Maybe with all the craziness going on right now, we may see Bionicle: Quest for Mata Nui release sooner than we thought.
